The following provides a very brief introduction to the principles and faith of Unitarian Universalism and answers specific questions about our fellowship.
There are seven principles that Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:
Unitarian Universalism (UU) draws from many sources:
These principles and sources of faith are the backbone of our religious community.
A flame within a chalice (a cup with a stem and foot), represents the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and is a symbol of the Unitarian Universalist faith. Many Unitarian Universalists worship services begin with lighting a chalice, followed by joys and concerns, in which people attending the services light a candle and briefly express something they want to celebrate or an issue that concerns them. You can see the chalice that HUUF has adopted at the top of each page of our website.
Everyone is welcome to attend HUUF's services. Our members have come to HUUF from a diversity of faiths and backgrounds. The most fundamental of all UU principles is personal freedom of religious belief. We do not leave our religious beliefs and spirituality to "the experts," but instead, seek to support one another in exploring each person's spiritual path.
Yes, we are affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Assocation. Each of the 1,041 congregations in the United States, Canada, and overseas are democratic in polity and operation; they govern themselves. They unite in the Association to provide services that individual congregations cannot provide for themselves. Each congregation is associated with one of the UUA’s 19 districts.
Our services are varied in themes and styles. We have an order of service we follow that includes a call to celebration, a chalice lighting, and a presentation by a member, a UU minister, or other speaker. Services also include music, meditation, and responsive readings.
We are able to provide childcare during our services, upon request. Children meet in a room just down the hall from where the services are held, so that young children will have access to their parents, if needed.
Religious education is currently being offered during some Sunday morning services.
Yes, we have a wheelchair ramp located on the east side of the Hattiesburg Garden Center.
