Religious Education
Children's RE
We at HUUF recognize the importance of
providing our youngest members with a nurturing and
fun environment in which to learn about their
Unitarian Universalist community and its religious traditions.
Our children's program includes song, stories, and
activities which reinforce our Seven Principles and
encourage children to use their minds, bodies and
emotions to express their unique identities and to
develop their sense of self-esteem.
The spirit of our
Children's RE program is this: that children
of all ages should be encouraged to explore the meaning of
spirituality in their lives in a supportive, age-appropriate,
UU context. Our Children's RE program takes place during our
regular service and will resume in the Fall. On the days that
Children's RE does not take place, children are welcome to
join their families in the regular service or to stay with our
child care provider who is at HUUF every week during the
regular service.
Adult RE
Our adult RE program provides a
liberal religious foundation upon which
adults are supported through their spiritual journeys.
We build fellowship and deepen our faith in an encouraging
environment while exploring fundamental religious and
ethical questions from our liberal Unitarian
Universalist perspective. Past RE series have included a
study of world religions, an exploration of Deep Ecology,
Joseph Campbell's "Power of Myth" series and "Conversations on
Love and Forgiveness".
This Fall, we will address A Chosen Faith: An Introduction to Unitarian Universalism by John Buehrens and Forrest Church. The authors address why Unitarian Universalism offers an appealing alternative to mainstream religions that stress theological creeds over individual conviction and belief. The book offers an introduction to UUism and its meanings and vocabulary. A free and chosen faith offers engagement that can wake us up to ourselves and makes us willing to risk what we have for what we could become. Adult RE will be led by Dr. Lilian Hill and will meet after Potluck on the first Sundays of the month: October 4, November 1, December 6, February 7 and March 7. Books will be available for purchase or you can purchase the book for $16.00 from Beacon Press at http://www.uuabookstore.org
